Raining Diamonds On Jupiter.

An exhibition by David Shillinglaw. Artist-in-residence at Caran d’Ache, Geneva, Switzerland. June 2025

David Shillinglaw’s exhibition Raining Diamonds on Jupiter invites viewers to step into a space where scientific truth meets poetic imagination. Created during his residency at Caran d’Ache in Geneva, the work draws inspiration from the strange and wondrous facts of our cosmos.

Shillinglaw’s practice is rooted in playfulness, and the joyful confusion of being human. His work echoes the tone of his book from 2021, ‘Relax, the Universe is Expanding’, exploring the balance between what we know and what we think we know—between the measurable and the mysterious. Using Caran d’Ache’s incredible materials, David crafts visual meditations reflecting on our limited, yet expansive, understanding of the universe. From the perspective of our tiny pale blue dot, Earth, how do we make sense of phenomena that stretch the limits of our comprehension? What does it mean to be human in a universe that is still unfolding?

Inspired by surreal scientific facts and guided by curiosity, Shillinglaw invites us to stay open-minded, and embrace the mystery, because if it really is raining diamonds on Jupiter… what else is possible?
